PCOTeen™ History

PCOTeen™, a division of the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Association, was founded on November 1, 1998. Through her participation on the various PCOSupport™ lists, PCOTeen™ Director Heather Lubinsky repeatedly saw women state "I wish someone would have listened to me when I was a teenager! I knew something was wrong with me!" A seed was planted, and soon PCOTeen™ was a reality.

On her own initiative, Heather created the PCOTeen™ e-mail list and began working on the PCOTeen™ web site. In the two years since that time, Heather has worked steadily towards her goal to give teens and young women around the world a place where they can get the help and support they need. In October 1999, Heather attended the Oregon Chapter Symposium where the first Teen break out session was held.

PCOTeen™'s latest program is ProjectHeart (Helping Educate And Reach out to Teens). ProjectHeart is designed to let let teens know that they are not alone in their fight against PCOS and its affect on a young woman's body. Teens will be able to correspond with older "cysters" on the Big Cyster List as well has have special chats.

PCOTeen™ Mission:

  • Provide a central resource of information for teens with PCOS
  • Support research on medical and/or surgical protocols to further understand the cause of PCOS and treat its associated symptoms
  • Promote awareness of PCOS especially in adolescents to the public
  • Educate physicians and other healthcare professionals to recognize and more fully understand PCOS and the nature of its treatment - specifically for adolescents
  • Provide a social support and resource network for teens with PCOS and their families
  • Bring about an understanding of the short term and long term complications of PCOS
  • Encourage approval by government health organizations of drugs and procedures that have been identified as being beneficial to women with PCOS.
