Book Review -

"Taking Charge of Your Fertility"
by Toni Weschler

review by Colleen Dixon

For those of you trying to conceive, an excellent resource is Toni Weschler's book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. In her book, Ms. Weschler explains how to read signals from your body. This is not the "rhythm method"; it is an excellent tool in learning about your body and fertility.

The book will teach you how to chart your basal body temperature (BBT), how to recognize differences in your cervical fluid (or cervical mucus — CM), and how to find the position of your cervix. The book includes a convenient chart (which you can copy) for keeping track of your cycle.

By tracking these various signals from your body, you can determine the optimal days within your cycle for conceiving. You can use the method as a means of birth control when you're not trying to conceive. The charts are very useful tools for you and your doctor. They can also help you spot any problems, such as annovulation, short luteal phase and nonchanging cervical fluid, and help your doctor by adding to the information available to them. You can even use the charts to assist in determining whether you are pregnant, and estimating a babyÕs due date!

Taking Charge of Your Fertility can be one of the best resources in your journey to conceive. The book goes into great detail and explains things in terms you can understand. It includes many examples, photographs and diagrams, along with true stories from other couples trying to conceive. If you want to better understand your body, Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a wonderful guide and resource for you and your spouse.

Ms. Weschler also has a new web site (www.tcoyf.com), and just introduced new software, in conjunction with Ovusoft, called TCOYF Fertility Software, which makes calculations and charts for you, based upon the methods taught in her book.

Toni Weschler lives in Seattle, Washington, and has a masterss degree in public health. She founded Fertility Awareness Counseling and Training Seminars in 1982.
