| Zinc |
| Essential for energy metabolism, proper growth and normal reproductive development. |

| Zona pellucida |
| The outer protein covering of an egg. Sperm binds to it prior to fertilization of the egg. Embryologists can thin the zona pellucida just prior to embryo transfer in IVF cycles (assisted hatching). |

| Zygote |
| A fertilized egg which has not yet divided. |

| Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT) |
| An ART in which eggs are removed from a woman's ovaries, fertilized with the man's sperm in a lab dish, and the resulting embryos are transferred into the woman's fallopian tubes during a minor surgical procedure. |
