~~ Happy 10th Birthday PCOSA ~~

The PCOS Record - April 11, 1999, v1 n4

Happy spring everyone! The PCOS Record is finally back and in fine form.
As a reminder, the purpose of this dispatch is to assist in the administration of the pco-support mailing list, to provide information to the members of this list about PCOSA, to educate members about netiquette, to bridge the gap between the pco-support mailing lists, PCOSA, and Usenet's alt.support.pco.

The PCOS Record will be a bi-weekly posting. Content will vary from issue to issue, but will hopefully cover topics including collections of personal and professional PCO-related websites, commonly used acronyms,low-carb info, recipes, netiquette, subscription/unsub FAQ's, and other resources. Some items, such as netiquette, sub/unsub information, and acronyms, may be repeated as necessary.

Happy Birthday to the PCO List!

First and foremost, a much belated "Happy Birthday" to the PCO support list. As of February 14,1999, we're three years old! We started out as an offshoot of the newsgroup alt.infertility as a hand-run email list, and have since moved to an automated list server with over 1500 members from around the world. Digests used to consist of 5 messages and now have 8 each. This means that over 30,000 posts have been made to this list!

Our growth has not stopped. We've expanded into many different lists to support the diverse needs of PCOS community.

  • PCO - a high volume list that covers every topic related to PCOS
  • PCONatural - This is a list specifically for natural treatments of PCOS
  • PCOPREG - This list is for PCOers that are pregnant or new mothers
  • PCOTeen - a list is for teens and young adults seeking support during this challenging time in their lives
  • PCOInfo List - This is an information only list! The intent of this list is to get out information on Chapter Meetings, Conferences, Seminars, Drug and Research Studies, Drug Approvals and Removals, PCOSA news and events, and Medical Reviews
  • PCONonFert - a list for information on PCO which does not pertain to fertility treatments

More information on PCO-related and other mailing lists can be found on the official PCOSupport webpage at http://www.pcosupport.org/online/email.html

It's time for the 1999 PCOSA Conference

After the success of the first conference, which was held in May 1997, PCOSA is holding another conference to continue efforts to educate women, their families, and the medical community about PCOS and its effects.

The conference will be held June 5 - 6, 1999, at the Arlington Park Hilton & Conference Center in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
Guest speakers include:

  • David A. Ehrmann, M.D., University of Chicago
  • Richard S. Legro, M.D., Pennsylvania State University, Hershey Medical Center
  • John Nestler, M.D., Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Mark Perloe, M.D., Atlanta Medical Center, Atlanta Reproductive Health Center

The cost of the conference is $199. PCOSA is offering discounts to lower attendance costs, too. Members of PCOSA can take $25 off the conference price. Early bird registrations (postmarked before May 15) will receive $25 off. Anyone traveling with a partner (multiple registrations) can also take $25 off.

  • To educate physicians and other healthcare professionals to recognize and more fully understand PCOS and the nature of its treatment - specifically for adolescents
  • To provide a social support and resource network for teens with PCOS and their families
  • To bring about an understanding of the short term and long term complications of PCOS
  • To encourage approval by government health organizations of drugs and procedures that have been identified as being beneficial to women with PCOS.

Ask The Moderator

Heather Lubinsky

Dear Moderator
Why are there several "footers" in my digests?
Signed, Too Many Feet

Dear Too Many Feet
Many times when people reply to a letter they forget to clip out the footer. Don't worry about it - having an extra footer never hurt anyone.

Dear Moderator
How do I reply privately to someone if I am getting the digest version of the list?
Signed, Private Cyster

Dear Private Cyster
The easiest place to find someone's e-mail address is at the beginning of their post. It looks like this:

--------------- MESSAGE pco.v002.n5000.2 ---------------
From: abc@123.com
Subject: Re: PCO: Mail me Privately
Date: Thu, 12 Nov 1998 12:04:55 EST
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

The From: area will have their e-mail address - use copy and paste to copy the e-mail address to the To: box in your e-mail program
Now you can send a private e-mail rather than sending a message to the entire list.

Comments? Concerns? Corrections? Suggestions??
