Here's to your Health!

As we approach the upcoming winter holiday season, I can't help but think about one sentiment that we often hear at gatherings of friends and family. “To health!” says Uncle Bob as we all raise our glasses to toast the celebration at hand. Whether he realizes it or not, he is right on the money with that toast. Enjoyment of time with your family and friends, exchanging of gifts, singing and laughing…these activities are among the best times of our lives. But without health, they can't be truly enjoyed.

Are you healthy? Whether you know it or not, you can have PCOS and be very healthy. PCOS is a tendency for certain hormonal processes within your body to work a little differently than they are supposed to. The results of these issues can be frustrating! But you can compensate for those differences by focusing on what (and when) you eat, and how you move your body. You may add some supplements and/or medications that help you to control some of the hormone issues that you face. But by and large, many women with PCOS are actually healthier than many other women because they pay attention, and make better choices concerning their lifestyle. So celebrate your healthy living as a result of PCOS! If you don't feel that you have already achieved overall health in spite of having PCOS, take this as an opportunity to start anew, in pursuit of new healthy achievements in 2008.

This holiday season, truly enjoy the time you spend with friends and loved ones. Appreciate their quirks as well as their contributions. Accept with a chuckle the snide remarks from Aunt Betty about the dryness of the carefully-prepared turkey. Let the sometimes-irritating noisy children's chatter roll off of you, as you appreciate the bonds that make their sibling arguments possible in the first place. Remember that all the little things are just part of a fulfilling life. Compared to the importance of your health and the health of those you love, these are trivial matters.

Think of the enjoyment of your holiday meal as an opportunity to make healthy choices, as opposed to exposure to a string of temptations that you can't control. Eat to enjoy the company of family and friends while nourishing your body. Don't eat to fill the void of what might be missing from your life. Remember that you can't eat enough to fill some forms of emptiness. So stop and think about how good the turkey is at strengthening your muscles for the next walk you will take. Celebrate! Enjoy! Laugh! And if a delicious piece of chocolate makes you smile, eat it!

Here's to your health! Make it a fabulous holiday by focusing on where it counts!

Sincerely,
Christine DeZarn
